When government is minimal

I'm tired of people who complain about the size of government. Yes, government should be as efficient as possible. Yes, we always should seek ways to prevent fraud, waste and abuse.

However, the size and growth of government is due to two factors that no amount of aggressive cutting can get rid of: population and resources. No matter what nation or who the people are, they have to get a government large enough to settle disputes and determine who has charge of its resources, artificial or natural.

What happens when you cut the size of government anyway? This for one thing:

The map shows which state employee is at the top of the pay scale. It looks like 40 out of 50 states give their coaches the highest pay. Yes, the state is reserving its best pay for gaming and entertaining. This says more about why government isn't solving problems. We've relegated its most important role to making entertainment. For all the Republicans complain about the National Endowment for the Arts and Public Broadcasting System, these aren't nearly as wasteful as public support for sports. If the first two are not the proper role of government, where are their complaints about sports?
